Everything You Need is Here Now

That phrase right there is going to be my next tattoo. On the inner side of my bicep on my right arm.

Seems so simple; yet so hard to apply.

This is a line from the book BUDDHISM PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

That needs to be a constant reminder especially for all the distractions we have nowadays.

The hardest thing we face today is the ability to live in the present moment. To be here, now.

The problem we all face right now is the endless amount of distractions we have every single day.

In this letter I will explain why this is important especially if you are diabetic.

10 years ago when I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes I didn't have the knowledge about diabetes, nutrition, fitness, coaching and mindset that I have today.

I had to start reading books about mindset, philosophy, nutrition, spirituality and psychology.

I had to do the research on my own and I started trying different things as experiments for my own benefit.

I never really trusted the doctors or anybody else when it came to managing my diabetes.

At the end of the day the doctor doesn't live with me and has no idea about my lifestyle, eating habits and physical activities.

Diabetes requires constant monitoring of your blood sugar levels, 24/7 every single day for the rest of your life.

This is the reality of this. In order to track your blood glucose levels you need to be on top of this, almost every hour and every single day. No breaks, no vacations.

Everything has to be tracked and measured: insulin doses, food quantity, time spent doing physical activities and many other factors that you probably already know or will learn.

A lot of diabetics from what I have read online, either newly diagnosed or those who have been living with this for some time; still deal with the stress, anxiety and fear that comes with living with diabetes.

-Fear of diabetes complications.

-Fear of blood sugars going low during your sleep and dying.

-Anxiety about possible future health problems.

-Fear of injecting insulin.

-Stress about uncontrolled blood sugar levels.

And I get it.

All of these are valid and normal especially if you are new to this.

And this is why if you have seen my posts and follow my instagram account my emphasis has always been the following:

I will help you build the “mindset” and “attitude” required to fight diabetes every single day.

In order to take care of your diabetes your mind has to be set on the present.

Your mind and attitude are the most important players in this game.

Remember that your mind also creates future scenarios because it is actually trying to protect you.

Your brain's function is to help you survive.

So in this letter I will give you a list of some tips or things I do to live and take care of my diabetes in the only moment we have, which is now.

Take one day at a time:

When you are doing something for the first time your mind gets overwhelmed. It's confusing, stressing at times. It's completely normal.

If you are new to diabetes my advice is to take things one step, one hour, one day at a time.

Focus on the next blood sugar reading, the next meal, the next insulin dose, the next step.

You need to learn  to live in the present moment because diabetes is a long term game. This is not a one week thing and then it goes away.

No, it's not. And I'm sorry to tell you this but that's the truth.

I want to give you honest, sincere, no bullshit advice.

My goal is to help you and guide you in order to make things “easier”.

Diabetes is a condition you need to be constantly monitoring and managing in the present moment.

This is a skill and it requires discipline and commitment.

Practice Mindfulness:

This is a very important tool.

Be aware of the foods you eat, your emotions, your thoughts.

Focus on the things you can control now.

Most anxiety is created from thinking about things we have no control over; the news, the weather, politics, the economy, the unknown future, the future health complications.

The future is created each moment you are fully present.

Be here in the present moment.

How can you do this ?

Practice meditation, focus on one activity and stop multitasking.

Read a book, go for a walk and feel the steps as you walk, the sound of the birds, the people around you.

Where are you right now ? Are you 100% here ?.

Reduce/ limit social media and news:

Many things online or in the social media world are reminders of the things we lack or simply distractions.

Every time we get on any social media channel we are bombarded with ads and there's always a product or someone who has what you need in order to feel complete or feel happy.

It's called marketing and it's what keeps the economy moving.

But let me say it again:

EVERYTHING YOU NEED IS HERE NOW.

If you use any social media; there are accounts that you can follow with great content that can teach you and inspire you.

Be honest with yourself and use social media as a tool to add more into your life and not as a source of anxiety or stress.

We can all control what we put into our minds.

Choose wisely and be intentional with the type of content you consume.

This is all I have for this letter today.

So to close this letter:

Diabetes management requires us to live in the present.

Here are some tools that help me stay focused on this moment:

-Take one day at a time

-Practice Mindfulness

-Reduce/ limit social media and news
