Intermittent Fasting and Diabetes
I've been doing intermittent fasting for the past 4 years.
Great; another guy talking to me about the benefits of intermittent fasting.
Nah;I'm going to tell you here what I do and why it works for me as a type 1 diabetic.
Remember my promise is to give you simple, minimalistic advice.
No extra bags; no bullshit.
Life is simple. Sometimes we complicate things too much.
This is what I do and this is what works for me:
I wake up at 7 AM. Sorry I can't wake up at 5 am yet.
For the first 5 hours of the day (7 AM to 12 PM) I only drink water and black coffee.
Black coffee: No cream, no sugar, no artificial sweeteners crap, no fucking bullshit.
Plain, simple, painless black coffee.
I drink my coffee slowly, little sips.
I enjoy it during those 5 hours.
Make yourself 2 - 3 cups. Up to you.
Around 10 am, the coffee starts signaling to my stomach: Bathroom break (sorry).
Back to work, business, reading, writing.
Here's what happens during these first 5 hours:
My blood sugars are stable and in range; I don't have food in my system so I don't have to worry about blood sugars or injecting insulin to eat.
I'm able to focus my attention and work.
My body is not busy processing food because I just don't eat any food.
This makes it easier for me to control my blood sugar levels during the morning hours and during the day.
Heres what I don't do:
I don't eat cereal breakfast crap.
I don't eat processed granola bars crap.
I don't go to dunkin donuts and eat donuts and start my day feeling like absolute crap.
I don't eat pancakes and syrup so then I have high blood sugar levels and feel lethargic and shitty. And then complain about why diabetes is so hard.
Are you following me ? Are you following my point ?
I'm not putting any food in my body so I don't have to worry about injecting insulin or my body processing food.
I'm removing one variable in the morning (food) to make things easier for me and my diabetes management.
How do I break my intermittent fasting ?
At 12 noon or sometimes 1 pm: I eat 4 whole eggs and avocado. Simple.
That's my first meal (breakfast) every single day.
Sometimes I break it with an apple or a protein yogurt. Depends on the day.
Then I will have my Lunch 3-4 pm: Protein, salad, healthy carb.
Then my dinner at 8-9 pm: Protein, veggies, healthy carb.
Snack before bed around 930 pm: cottage cheese or oikos pro protein yogurt
That's it.
How do you start intermittent fasting ?
-You start, simple. Lol
-First; consult with your doctor or endocrinologist, if the medications or long acting insulin dose need to be adjusted.
-This is in order to avoid low or high blood sugar levels in the morning during your fasting hours. You need to try for yourself and experiment.
-Start with the 16/8 fasting method:
Fast for 16 hours and eat during the 8 hour window period.
Example: Last meal; dinner is at 8 pm; Next meal, next day breakfast could be at 12 PM noon.
I don't follow the exact timing.
I eat dinner at 8 pm or 9 pm and then eat the next day at 12 noon. It depends, not everyday is perfect.
-Be flexible on the weekends.
-Experiment and see what works best for you.
-Some weekends or during holidays give yourself a break. Eat breakfast with family or friends if you have to.
In my case I can just have a coffee and chat with them.
My body is used to it already and I can go 5 - 6 hours in the morning without food. I don't even think about it.
(I train my weights workout on saturdays for 1 hour completely fasted. No food at all).
-Start slowly in the morning with fasting for the first 3 hours, then try 4, and then 5.
Your body will get used to it.
At the beginning you might feel hungry, that's ok.
It's ok to be a little hungry at the beginning.
You can also drink sparkling water, it will help to make you feel full or not needing food.
In a matter of weeks your body will get used to it and you will not be thinking about food, I promise you.
So to close this letter:
-Consult with your primary doctor or endocrinologist about starting intermittent fasting and insulin doses or medications adjustment.
-Start fasting for the first 5 hours of the day.
-Drink your black coffee, no cream, no sugar, enjoy it.
-Drink water.
-Focus more and be more productive during the morning hours.
-Try it.
-Why not ?
-Do you believe me ?
